Leadership can be a lonely place.

To be effective, leaders must stand in two places at once. Bridging that chasm is a lonely and difficult place to be. Garry Ridge, author of Helping People Win At Work said, “Great leaders have a heart of gold but a backbone of steel.”

When thinking of leadership a backbone of steel is a given. Leaders are strong, confident and hold people accountable.   I found myself questioning the other side. I’ve always let my team see my authentic self—the weird, imperfect side of me—it made me question my leadership. Did they respect me? Could they respect me when I didn’t show up “perfect”  in all situations?

Hearing Garry Ridge speak about "hearts of gold" with such conviction changed something in me. I realized this was my greatest strength and that when balanced with a spine of steel, it made me an exceptional leader. This shift helped to create the founding principles for HMH Solutions—empowering leaders and teams while creating mission critical space for lasting transformation.
